Pope, Cuban bishops to evaluate island's progress

Pope John Paul II has summoned all Cuban bishops to an extraordinary meeting June 8-14 at the Vatican, a Vatican source has told The Herald.

The purpose of the meeting is to evaluate the results of the Pope's visit to Cuba and the future of relations between the Roman Catholic Church and the Cuban government, the source said.

``This is not an ordinary convocation, either in the number of the participants or its duration or the circumstances in which it's held,'' the source said, requesting anonymity.

Apparently, the Vatican is not happy with the Cuban government's slowness in complying with the agreements reached by the Pope and President Fidel Castro in January.

``There are several issues the Cuban government has not complied with,'' the source said. Those issues include ``a greater opening, a general political amnesty and greater space, so the Church can participate in the communications media and other social areas. The world is opening to Cuba, but Cuba is not opening to the world, as the Pope requested.''

Cardinal Jaime Ortega, archbishop of Havana and chairman of the Cuban Bishops Conference, will head the delegation.
