Cuba: Job bribery ring broken up

HAVANA, March 12 -- (AFP) -- Lucrative jobs in Cuba's tourism sector were available for a hefty bribe here until authorities nabbed the leaders of a job-selling ring, the official Granma daily said Thursday.

Job hunters paid up to $700 dollars to get a job in the hotly contested tourism job market where workers earn tips and bonuses in dollars.

Jorge Matin Perdomo Castro and Liz Lisandor Hector Garcia were sentenced to 12 years, while an accomplice, Karla Maria Perez Betancourt, received a 10-year sentence.

Six others -- including the former director and deputy director of an official job agency -- were fined for falsifying documents and are prohibited from holding managerial jobs.
