Democracia Flotilla

We will like to begin by informing you that the name of this non-violent civil movement has on its own come to be "Democracia."

In keeping with our determination of stimulating a non violent popular expression movement which through the practice of civil disobedience inside Cuba will turn into the Cuban factor that will force tyranny and violence out of our homeland, this movement will organize a second flotilla which will depart from Key West on Saturday, September 2nd, 1995 at 5:00 A.M., to the 12 mile limit in front of Varadero Beach, returning the same day during the early hours of the night.

The objectives of this flotilla are:

  1. To demonstrate in international waters at the 12 mile limit, by people from Latin America and the United States as well as Cuban exiles, our solidarity towards the goal of democracy for the Island, and in protest for the harassment and incarceration on the part of Castro's political police against the peaceful dissidents in the Island who attempted to participate in the memorial of the ""13 de marzo" tugboat massacre by gathering at the Malecon and praying for the 21 children and 20 adults that were murdered a year ago by Castro's military dictatorship.
  2. To protest the unjust economic apartheid that Castro has implemented in Cuba by which the best tourist installations are reserved for foreigners with dollars while Cuban citizens are.
  3. To protest Castro's disproportional military apparatus which consumes vast resources that could otherwise be used to feed the needy people of Cuba.
  4. To protest the violence displayed by Castro's government against last month's flotilla, as well as his threats against the rights we have as Cubans to enter our waters and territory without the humiliating process of having to request a visa as if we were foreigners to that nation.

We are inviting people from all nationalities, especially boat owners, to participate in this peaceful demonstration on behalf of democracy for Cuba. We are asking all the participants to take with them portable mirrors to signal to the Cubans in the Island our presence there.

IMPORTANT We are especially asking those who own rubber rafts equipped with outboard motors to please take them along and those who are not going with us but wish to participate in this effort, to donate or lend rubber rafts and outboard mot ors to the flotilla. Furthermore, we are asking rubber raft manufacturers to offer us reduced prices on the rafts so that we may acquire as many as possible from them.

All those interested in participating, please call (305) 883-2789
