Majority of Americans support Cuba embargo-poll

WASHINGTON, March 25 (Reuters) - A majority of Americans support keeping the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba although most say they are uninformed about issues and events relating to the communist country, a poll released on Wednesday said.

The poll released by the American Enterprise Institute think tank said that 64 percent of Americans favor keeping the U.S. embargo against Cuba, while only 27 percent favored lifting it.

But the poll of 1,008 adults conducted between March 6-9 by Wirthlin Worldwide, showed that 58 percent of Americans do not follow developments concerning Cuba. About 38 percent said they followed the issues somewhat closely, the poll said.

Among those who closely follow events in Cuba, support for maintaining the embargo, imposed after Fidel Castro seized power in 1959, is even higher. The poll said 71 percent of those respondents favored maintaining the embargo, which 60 percent saying they "strongly'' favored keeping the embargo.

The poll said support for the embargo was widespread across various ethnic and social groups.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent, the group said. REUTERS
