Police disperse group at Spanish embassy

From Herald Staff and Wire Reports

HAVANA -- Dozens of people milled around the Spanish Embassy on Tuesday afternoon and a few tried to break through a police cordon and enter the embassy, only to be dispersed by police.

``Some people tried to jump the wall into the compound, and dozens of others gathered outside,'' said Raul Rivero of the independent news agency Cubapress. It was unclear what the would-be invaders were after, but the incident came amid tension between Havana and Madrid after Cuba rejected Spain's choice of a new ambassador.

Rivero told The Herald that members of the Communist Youth staged a rally outside the embassy to denounce the Spanish government. Victoria Velazquez, the group's secretary general, urged the young militants ``to stay alert and ready to repulse any action against the revolution.''
