MAIN CUBAN HUMAN RIGHTS GROUPS

Herald Staff

* Cuban Commission for Human Rights & National Reconciliation. Led by Elizardo Sanchez, now in jail.

* Cuban Committee for Human Rights. The oldest of Cuba's independent human rights groups. Founded in 1976 by Ricardo Bofill, who is in exile in Miami. Now led by two brothers, Gustavo and Sebastian Arcos.

* Cuban Human Rights Party. Says it is working for changes in Cuba similar to those that have swept through Eastern Europe. Top leadership in jail.

* Marti Committee for Human Rights. Leader Hubert Jerez Marino now in jail.

This year, the four groups joined in an informal association for mutual support.

There are also more than a dozen smaller human rights and dissident groups devoted to specific issues. Among them are: Association for Free Art; Sendero Verde -- an anti-war, anti- nuclear group that opposes Cuban involvement in Angola; the Cuban Pro Amnesty Group; the pro-glasnost and pro-perestroika Jose Marti Association; Association of Independent Cuba Journalists; and Liberty and Faith, which looks into religious persecution.
