The Associated Press Monday, January 8, 2001; 10:08 PM HAVANA –– Scores of children, some wearing military fatigues, marked the 42nd anniversary Monday of Fidel Castro's triumphant entry into the Cuban capital at the head of a caravan of guerrilla fighters. Children at a huge school complex built on a former military base sang songs and performed plays about the revolutionaries' arrival in Havana from eastern Cuba, where much of the fighting was fought. The revolutionary battle led by Castro, now 74, triumphed on Jan. 1, 1959, when then-President Fulgencio Batista fled the country. The majority of the guerrilla fighters did not arrive in Havana for another week. Eight months after the new government took power, the revolutionaries converted one of the Batista government's military bases into Ciudad Libertad – the educational complex where the children remembered Monday's anniversary. |
