Canada confirms Cuba trip plans

OTTAWA -- (AFP) -- The Canadian government confirmed officially Tuesday that Prime Minister Jean Chretien will visit Cuba Monday and Tuesday.

The highlight of the trip will be a meeting with President Fidel Castro, but Chretien will also meet with church leaders, business people and non-governmental organizations, his office said.

In a swipe at U.S. criticism of Canada's relations with Cuba, Chretien said in a prepared statement: ``Canada has long practiced a policy of constructive engagement with Cuba.

``We believe the best way to promote our values is through dialogue, not isolation.''

On arrival in Havana, Chretien will participate in the inauguration of a new terminal at the international airport which was financed with the help of Canada's Export Development Corporation.
