'ISLAND-PRISON' REPORT
SNEAKED OUT OF CUBA

From Herald Staff and Wire Reports

An article written by a former political prisoner and smuggled out of Cuba is being published today by El Miami Herald, The Herald's Spanish language edition. Ricardo Bofill, a writer and ex-college professor, is sequestered in the French Embassy in Havana where he has requested asylum.

In his smuggled report, Bofill describes his position as chairman of Cuba's Human Rights Committee as "a humble, hindered task on behalf of our politically persecuted people on this large island-prison."

Bofill said his committee's platform demands an end to capital punishment, arbitrary arrests, abuse of prisoners, religious persecution and "the virtual martial law we live under."

"We have no links with the CIA," Bofill writes. "We are nonviolent. Our only weapons are our words. And we'll use them as long as there's life."
