THESE FOUR DEATHS WERE NOT IN VAIN

My father, Armando Alejandre Jr., was shot down over international waters on Feb. 24. The four crew members' deaths were not in vain.

My father was an active participant in the fight to free Cuba. His life was dedicated to helping all Cuban exiles, refugees, and those living in Cuba with their struggle against Fidel Castro's regime. He was not a member of any formal organization. My father worked with Brothers to the Rescue to help rafters and refugees.

The United States was his second country. He came to live here when he was 10 years old. He loved this country and volunteered as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War to defend the nation that he adopted.

It's disgusting to hear a representative from my country try to absolve Castro for my father's death. It is ridiculous to say that Cuban armed forces were provoked and threatened by tiny, unarmed, civilian planes to the point of shooting them down.

My father was blown up, but he will live on. His and the others' deaths will inspire determination and a need to fight in others.
