Abortion Rate in Cuba Causing Grave Concern

HAVANA, NOV 17 (ZENIT).- Three million abortions in the last few decades, 100,000 a year and just over 270 a day -- these are the sad numbers of the 'culture of death' in Cuba, with a total population of less than 12 million. A sad contrast, indeed, to the way Cuba once was; a hard legacy akin to that of many countries of the former Soviet Union.

Cardinal Jaime Ortega, Archbishop of Havana has launched a number of initiatives to awaken consciences. In addition to pamphlets, the archdiocese has organized courses on natural family planning and periodic meetings with experts to address issues like bioethics and human sexuality. This is a great effort on the part of the Church in Cuba, which has neither the necessary material resources nor sufficiently prepared laity for evangelization.
