Update on the Santa Clara Six: March 10, 1998

The hunger strike continues. José Antonio Alvarado Almeida has been moved from Motembo Prison to "El Pre". José Manuel Yera Benítez, is in the Manacas Prison one of the worst prisons in Santa Clara.

Iván Lema Romero is in the Mens Provincial Prison of Villa Clara. Lilian Meneces Martínez, and Ileana Peñalver Duque and Daula Carpio Matas's are in prison in Guamajal. Apparently in the infirmary and they are receiving intravenous nourishment against their will.

Update March 9, 1998

All of the hunger strikers are in separate prisons throughout the Santa Clara province. The hunger strike continues. José Antonio Alvarado Almeida has been moved to Motembo Prison. José Manuel Yera Benítez, is in the Manacas Prison. Iván Lema Romero is in the prison "El Pre." Lilian Meneces Martínez, and Ileana Peñalver Duque are in the Jardin Correctional and the Fomento Correctional. Daula Carpio Matas's location is currently unknown, but we do know that she's incarcerated.

- expressing concern at reports that the Santa Clara 6 are in a poor state of health;
- urging that they be given any necessary medical attention immediately;
- requesting that any charges brought against them in connection with their attempts to peacefully exercise his right to freedom of expression and entry be dropped and that they be released immediately.
