The
instruments are now being connected to individual laboratories in
the other major universities in Florida via Internet-2, a 100-megabyte
bandwidth electronic information pathway. I-2 connection will allow
us to teach classes on AEM techniques to students at all Florida Universities
and then allow students/researchers to remotely operate the instruments
via I-2. EPMA is a high-precision instrument used to image,
identify, and chemically analyze extremely small (on the scale of
micrometers) objects without chemically altering or physically destroying
them. This instrument is used by scientists in many different fields,
particularly, Materials Science, Geology, Medical Science & Technology,
Computer Science (e.g., IC circuits & Chip manufacturing), and
Forensic Science.
