Guide to the Program: Application and Admission
The doctoral application and admission process requires time, patience, paperwork, and attention to detail and deadlines. This section provides an overview of the major elements and sequence of events in the application and admission process. This overview is divided into two steps. Step one deals with filing the proper documents at the proper time and to the proper offices. Step two deals with complying with the academic standards of Florida International University, the College of Education, and the Graduate Program in Adult Education and Human Resource Development. The application and admission process may require several weeks to a few months to fully complete. It is dependent on the prompt delivery or accessibility of your transcripts, GRE scores, resume, letters of recommendation, and other required documents. A program admissions committee makes the admission recommendation and forwards it to the Dean of the University Graduate School. Accordingly, if you wish to begin doctoral study in the immediate future, you should pursue the steps described in this section as soon as possible, because no action will be taken on incomplete application files.
Step One: Meet or Exceed Criteria/Standards. Listed below are the criteria and standards for admission into the AE/HRD program.
- Undergraduate GPA. The undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) must be at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester hours of upper division undergraduate study (A = 4.0).
- Graduate GPA. The graduate grade point average (GGPA) must be at least 3.25 in all graduate work attempted (A = 4.0.
- GRE. The combined verbal and quantitative score of the GRE must be 1,000 or greater. Persons submitting GRE scores less than 1,000 will be required to re‑take the examination prior to being considered for admission.
- Experience. This is an advanced graduate degree program and, therefore, will normally only be available to persons with significant professional experience and /or career goals directly related to the field of Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Applicants' current or projected capacities for leadership in the field of AE/HRD also are considered important during the admission review process.
- TOEFL. Foreign applicants must present a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based).
The following summarizes the categories of admission:
Admission Status |
Definition/Consequences
|
Full Admission
Conditional One Term Admission
Conditional Two Term Admission |
All criteria are met. All required and official documents are on file, and the program, department, college and university admissions committees have approved the application. You will be notified of your admission status by the University Graduate Admissions Office. You can check the status of your admission at http://gradschool.fiu.edu/status.htm.
When all of the
required academic credentials have not been received, but, with what is available it appears the applicant
is admissible. The missing documents are still required for final review. The
student is given a grace period of one semester (term) to complete the admissions
process. When the additional documents are reviewed, the applicant can be fully
admitted, conditionally admitted or denied.
When all of the required
academic documents have been received, and the review indicates they do not meet the minimum standards. The student is conditionally admitted and allowed to register for two
semesters (terms). Full admission status is not granted until the requirements or
conditions for admission are satisfied. |
| Non-Degree Seeking |
Not admitted. Person may take up to 12 credits (no more than six are recommended). It permits persons who have at least submitted a partial application file to begin the program on a non‑degree seeking basis. None of the hours taken in this status will count toward the degree until and unless the applicant is fully admitted to the program. This status is not encouraged, but is afforded to those applicants who present strong evidence of satisfying all admissions criteria. Applicants in this classification will be given up to 12 credits to achieve full admission, or they will be prevented from enrolling in additional courses until their file is complete and admission is granted. |
Step Two: File Proper Documents. The following discussion identifies the types of documents, and actions required during the admission process. It is important to send the proper documentation to the office for each document/action listed below to avoid delays in the admission process. If clarification is required, contact the Program Director, Dr. Jo D. Gallagher, at 305-348‑3418. Contact information important during the admission process appears in Section 10 of this Guide.
