What is stormwater?
Stormwater is the flow of water that results from precipitation and which occurs immediately following rainfall. When rainfall occurs, precipitation infiltrates into the soil surface, some is taken up by plants, and some is evaporated into the atmosphere. Stormwater is the precipitation that runs off land surfaces and impervious areas into lakes, rivers, and streams.
Why be concerned with stormwater?
Stormwater has the capabilities of picking up pollutants such as oil and grease, human and animal waste, debris, and toxic materials. This untreated water ends up in lakes, streams, and rivers in which we use for recreational activities.
