Text: Anton, Davis, and Bivens, 9th Ed.
If you only need Calc I and Calc II, you may obtain the single variable version
of the book:
http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470182040.html
If you need all three semesters of Calculus, you may obtain the combined version
of the book:
http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470183454.html
My class will use the
WileyPlus web site for required online homework.
You have 3 options:
1) Purchase
only WileyPlus access which comes with an electronic copy of the textbook.
It costs $68.95 for the 2-semester single variable text and $82.95 for the
3-semester combined text, but you will not have a hard copy of the book.
2) Purchase a new book from the FIU bookstore which comes with an access code
for WileyPlus. The adds only about $7 to the cost of the book. If you choose
this option, tell the bookstore you want the package for section U05 that comes
packaged with a WileyPlus code. I believe this option is only available with the
2-semester single variable version of the book.
3) Purchase a used text for whatever price you can find and also
purchase
WileyPlus access separately for $68.95.
Each student will need to create an account by clicking on the "register" link
and following the on screen instructions.
Here is the URL you need for Wiley plus: Your students can gain access to your class by registering at the following class section URL: http://edugen.wiley.com/edugen/class/cls123970/
The "course administrator" of listed as Meziani, but once you log in you should find my name.
A student solutions manual is available, but is optional. In fact, all solutions
are available here. The
username and password required for access will be provided in class.
Course objectives: the students will learn to
correctly comprehend, use, and manipulate the symbols and ideas of differential
calculus using spoken and written English.
Grading scheme:
Successful completion of ALEKS Calculus preparation module by September 3: 10%. Note: a minimum of 80% must be attained in the ALEKS assessment in order for you to continue in this class. Furthermore, if you don't make that 65% by Saturday Aug. 29 at 1159PM, I will administratively drop you from the class. If you don't get at least 80% by 1159PM on September 3, you will get 0 and should consider dropping.
For more information about how to access ALEKS, see below.
Three 75 minute term tests held in class: 15% each. Schedule: 10/13, 11/5, 12/1 (tentative)
Online homework using Wiley-Plus: 15%. I will also assign offline homework, but this will not be graded. You will still need to do the assigned offline homework from the text to be adequately prepared for my tests. For WileyPlus homework, please pay attention to the due dates listed on the WileyPlus web site. There are no extensions on due dates; don't even ask! Don't wait until the day the homework is due to do it, because if your Internet connection goes out, you are out of luck.
Cumulative final exam 30%. Final exam will be held in class Thursday, Dec. 10 945-1145AM.
The grading scale goes as follows: To get a passing
80-100%=A, 70-79%=B,
60-69%=C, 50-59%=D, 0-49%=F.
Attendance:
Optional except on test days. If you miss a quiz/test, and in
my opinion your absence is excusable, then your final exam will be adjusted to
make up. If the
absence is not excusable, you get 0 on the missed test. Be prepared to document
your excuse with doctor's note, etc.
You are responsible for any work covered in class, unless
told otherwise.
Course contents In text: Ch. 1, Ch. 2, Ch. 3,
Ch. 4.1-4.6,4.8, 5.1-5.3, 10.1 Note: we will not necessarily follow this material
linearly- there may be some jumping back and forth.
Learning Assistant This semester, the class
will be assigned Learning Assistants. These are students who recently took
Calculus 1 and did very well, and they will be leading peer led study groups.
The details of how this will be run have not been worked out yet, but should be
arranged in the first week of class.
