The Department offers an undergraduate program in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) with an endorsement in ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). This program prepares teachers of students mild disabilities. It meets the new noncategorical Florida certification requirements and is designed to include the competencies necessary for ESOL endorsement.

An Associate in Arts Degree or equivalent preparation in basic general education is required.

Each of three prerequisite courses listed below is 3 credits. In addition, each course requires a field experience of 15 clock hours outside of class time.

  • EDF 1005 Introduction to Education
  • EDG 2701 Teaching Diverse Populations
  • EME 2040 Introduction to Educational Technology

These 15 hours are required beyond those taken to meet general education requirements and must be from the following liberal arts and sciences areas:

  • Fine arts or humanities
  • Political sciences, sociology, economics, cultural geography, or speech
  • Mathematics
  • Natural sciences and/or psychology

Among these 15 hours must be included

  • One course in mathematics combined with General Education requirements
  • Two courses in the natural sciences
  • At least one course taken to meet the natural science requirements in general education and/or prerequisites must include a laboratory component.
  • Students must take six credit hours with an international or diversity focus in lower division (In addition to EDG 2701)

To qualify for admission to the program, undergraduates must have met all the lower division requirements including:

  • passing CLAST score
  • completed 60 semester hours
  • have earned a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5
  • Satisfactory SAT/ACT/or EACT. All of those entering at the junior level must present a minimum score of 840 on the
  • SAT prior to April 1, 1995 or 950 after April 1, 1995 or 960 after October 1, 1998 or ACT score of 19 prior to October 1989 or 20 on the EACT
  • must be otherwise acceptable into the program

Exceptional Student Education/English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The ESE program is 67 credits beyond the Associate in Arts Degree or equivalent preparation. Many of the courses require fieldwork experiences. The total program is 167 credits. Each of the courses listed below is 3 credits unless otherwise indicated.
