Applicability

This policy is applicable to all research activities involving animals, whether the activities are funded or not. As an institution supported by Public Health Service (PHS) funding and governed by the responsibilities and procedures set forth by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) Animal Welfare Assurance (AWA), FIU has the responsibility to comply with the PHS policy. This Policy does not affect applicable state or local laws or regulations that impose more stringent standards for the care and use of laboratory animals.

All persons involved in animal care and use are required to be aware of the legal obligations of the institutions, their responsibilities in relation to these institutional commitments, and the regulatory requirements for which they may be personally accountable.

Suspected deviations from the FIU Animal Care Policy should be reported to the IACUC.  Reports should be made to the Animal Care Facility Manager or the IACUC Chairperson.  All reports will be treated with confidentiality.
