BIOGRAPHIES OF AFRICAN, AFRICAN-AMERICAN
AND CARIBBEAN
FIGURES
This course will analyze the biographies of celebrated black personalities
from the African diaspora, including Africa, the United States and the
Caribbean islands. It will enable the students to compare the differences
and complexities of the various presentations. We will examine the events
that the authors depict and then analyze why they think these personalities
are important to write about. For instance, we will study how issues such
as the struggle against colonial rule and the quest for freedom reoccur
in many of these authors' works. Furthermore, we will determine whether
or not these biographies are successful in promoting the causes of:
-
Nelson Mandela (South Africa)
-
Toussaint Louverture (Haiti)
-
Malcolm X (United States)
-
Martin Luther King (United States)
Finally, it will compare the lives portrayed in
the biographies to determine similarities and differences in age, occupation,
economic status, number of followers, effectiveness of their theories,
their impact upon the world, and circumstances that brought about their
death.
