This course will analyze the cultural, political and economic issues portrayed by Major African writers through their books. It will be a literary journey through the countries of Senegal, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. It will closely examine the literary styles used to illustrate the realities Africans face in contemporary and traditional Africa. Specific issues such as political liberation, the women's struggle to find independence and fulfillment, race and culture, the dominant factors creating crises in African people's lives will be expanded.
Films will be used to complement the analysis and
synthesize the themes into a cohesive and realistic depiction of both contemporary
and traditional Africa.
