This course is designed to be an interactive exploration
of personal leadership development. Through the introduction
of current theories and models, you will increase your
understanding of leadership, examine how attitudes about
yourself and others influence leadership behavior, and
stimulate the development of new skills through demonstration
and practice. The course considers leadership topics
from three perspectives: the individual, the group,
and the society. Readings, discussions, reflections,
and experiential activities will examine self-development
and understanding, group dynamics, organizational design,
ethics, and teamwork.
Class Participation – The course
requires a high degree of interaction and exchange of
ideas generated from the weekly readings and reflections.
Small group work will be used for discussions and simulations.
Therefore, class attendance is required and will be
recorded. You are allowed 2 absences. Every subsequent
absence will lower your final grade by one point. It
is expected that class will start on time.
Minute Papers – The Minute Paper
is a reflective technique that will be used at the end
of selected classes. It is designed to generate immediate
feedback regarding a topic of the day. The Minute Papers
will be collected. (5 points)
Personal Vision Statement – Synthesize
information from your self-assessments and key concepts
from leadership theories and articulate your ideas in
a written vision statement that incorporates your core
values. (7 points)
Group Leadership Project – You
will work in small groups to identify a program, project,
service, or initiative on campus or in the community
that will address change for the common good. The group
will produce a project blueprint and present a description
of the group process that took place to achieve their
shared vision. (30 points).
Quizzes– There will be 3 quizzes
that will take place after the following portions of
the text have been discussed: Parts 1& 2, Part 3,
and Parts 4 & 5. (16 points each)
Leadership Action Plan – After
reflecting on the learning from the course experience,
you will use theory to enhance practice by writing a
personal leadership development plan. The plan will
incorporate your philosophy of leadership and it will
address how you will apply theory to practice while
a student at FIU, and in future career and community
roles. (10 points).
