Course requirements

Students must attend the Departmental Seminar Series and all Colloquium Presentations.  Additionally students will describe their research project in a five-page proposal and in an oral presentation.  The oral presentation should be 30 minutes long excluding questions and answers.  The five-page proposal should be given to the student’s dissertation committee at least one week prior to the oral presentation. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that ALL dissertation committee members attend the oral presentation.  If all the committee members cannot attend, then specific permission from the instructor needs to be obtained well in advance of the oral presentation.  Also, the student will need to bring a partially completed form M-2 or D-3 to their oral presentation; forms are available at http://www.fiu.edu/ugs/forms.html.  Finally, an introduction to researching the chemical literature will provided at the university library on Sept. 12 (see below).

Seminars

Will be listed on the Department website (www.fiu.edu/orgs/chemistry)

Course objectives and outcomes

The course is intended to present a broad range of scientific topics to graduate students and to improve their presentation skills.  The expected outcome is enhancement of the ability of students to present at scientific meetings.

Grading

The course will be graded on attendance, presentation skills, and ability to ask and answer questions.

Presentation location

If you would like to deliver your seminar in the Wertheim Conservatory, make sure you reserve it.  You must reserve all necessary AV equipment well in advance and bring it to the appropriate location.  Make sure you know how to use it.

Important dates

Before September 5, provide the instructor with a list of your committee members and a copy of form M-1 or D-1. Forms are available at http://www.fiu.edu/ugs/forms.html.  Dr. O’Shea selects one member of your committee, and the rest are selected in consultation with your advisor.

Before September 12, provide the instructor with the date, time, location, and title of your oral presentation as agreed upon by all your committee members.  You need to reserve a room.  In addition, reserve any and all required AV equipment.  The preferred time is Mon. at 3:30-4:45.
