Special Collections Books: Physical Processing

The books themselves are not stamped or processed in any way--no barcode is affixed; no security strip is inserted; the book is not stamped; and no spine label is put onto the book.

Instead, all identifying information is put onto a card that is placed in each book so that it projects above the text block.

The call number is written across the top of the rare book card -- example: SPC PR53.S32 1993.

If the book is not going to be cataloged at the time of processing, the Aleph number is written across the top. [The Aleph number will be used in place of a call number to shelve the book.]

Barcodes are placed on the lower part of the card.

The Aleph number is written above the barcode [unless it will be used in place of a call number].

Once processed, the books are placed on the shelf marked SPC books for Vicki.
