Gift books come to Cataloging from Acquisitions after they have been searched in the library catalog and stripped. If the book is a duplicate, Acquisitions will determine whether the book should be added as a 2nd or 3rd, etc., copy. Any questions about this decision should be referred to Aminta Mayorga. If you have any duplicate titles which do not specifically state to add as an additional copy, please check with Aminta.
Because the library needs to keep an audit trail for the source of all our materials, the word Gift should be entered in subfield x of the 852 field of the HOL record.
Title VI books are a special category of gift. They are paid for by LACC from Title VI grant funds; then they are given to the library. We enter a note that says Title VI FY08 in the subfield x of the 852 field of the HOL record. Because all Title VI books are gifts, it's not necessary to add a note that says gift-the old phrase is: it goes without saying. And because this is "source of acquisition" information for audit purposes, we use a non-public note rather than a tickler. [Ticklers are used to designate particular collections.]
Do not get confused by the fact that the library purchases books from some of the same vendors that LACC uses. If you have any questions about whether a book is a Title VI gift or a library purchase, check with Aminta.
