MARC Format Integration - Phase 2 :

Major Changes in OCLC

NEW TYPE OF RECORD CODE: t - MANUSCRIPT LANGUAGE MATERIAL
Use code t in Books format for manuscript items. "Manuscript" refers to something that is written by hand or that is an unpublished or "single instance" item (for example, a handwritten letter, typescript, or galley proofs). It is this handwritten or "single instance" characteristic that distinguishes something as a manuscript, as opposed to a mass-printed, mass-produced, or multiple-copy publication.

NEW TYPE OF RECORD CODE: p - MIXED MATERIALS
Use code p in Mixed Materials format for collections that are accumulated by or about a person or body, compiled by someone other than the original producer, and consist of various materials (textual materials, photographs, and ephemera).

NEW FIXED-FIELD ELEMENT: TYPE OF CONTROL (Ctrl:).
Use Type of control to indicate that the bibliographic item (in any format) is under archival control, which usually involves special handling and may include restrictions on access.

COMPUTER FILES SERIAL WORKFORM
Computer Files Serial workform "(wfms)" command is invalid. Serials information in computer file serial records will be transferred to field 006. To enter computer file serial records, use Computer Files format, and enter serials-related information in feld 006.

NEW FIELD: 006 FIXED-LENGTH DATA ELEMENTS ADDITIONAL MATERIAL CHARACTERISTICS
Use field 006 to code for the characteristics of an item that CANNOT be coded in the fixed field. Such characteristics are by definition "additional." Characteristics coded in the fixed field are the "main" characteristics. For example, you may use field 006 to code for the serial-related data of a sound recording that is issued as a serial. Use also for coding the characteristics of accompanying material. For example, you may use field 006 to code for a book that accompanies a map and explains how to use it.

WHICH FORMAT TO USE FOR:

NONPRINT SERIALS, OTHER THAN ELECTRONIC (E.G., A SOUND RECORDING ISSUED SERIALLY)

ELECTRONIC OR DIGITAL SERIALS
Use Computer Files format. Use code s or b in BLvl. Optionally, enter coded serial characteristics in field 006.

MAP SERIALS
Use Maps format. Use code s or b in BLvl. Optionally, enter coded serial characteristics in field 006.

KITS
Use Visual Materials format. Optionally, enter coded characteristics of component parts in 006 fields.

ELECTRONIC OR DIGITAL BOOKS

DIGITAL CARTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS

THESES
Use Books format for unpublished-booklike theses (Type: t). Otherwise, determine the type of nonbook material and use the appropriate format. (Former practice was to use Books format (Type: a) for booklike theses.)

ATLASES
Use Maps format. (Former practice was to use Books format.)
