Adding, Modifying an 006 Field in OCLC



Use field 006 to code for characteristics of an item that cannot be coded in the fixed field. Such characteristics are by definition "additional." Characteristics coded in the fixed field are "main" characteristics. For example, you may use field 006 to code for the serial-related information of a sound recording that is issued as a serial. Use also for coding the characteristics of accompanying material. For example, you may use field 006 to code for a book that accompanies a map and explains how to use it.

Difference between 006 and 007: 006 describes additional characteristics of an item or the characteristics of accompanying material. 007 describes physical attributes of the item or accompanying material (This is a new practice for 007.)

ADDING AN 006 FIELD

  1. Press F10 to send any edits you have made before doing step 2, or you lose them.
  2. Type "n006 [format qualifier]" and press F10. Choose from this list of format qualifiers:
       	Books		bks	Visual Materials	vis
   	Serials		ser	Mixed Materials		mix
   	Maps		map	Computer Files		com
   	Scores		sco	Sound Recordings	rec
  3. Enter codes by: Typing data. Moving the cursor to next mnemonic using arrow keys.
  4. Press F10 to send the data. To cancel type "ret" at the Home position then F10.

MODIFY EXISTING 006 FIELDS

  1. Press to send any edits you have made before doing step 3, or you lose them.
  2. To modify the first 006: Type "m006" or "mod006" at the Home position and press F10. If there is more than one 006 field on the record, Type "m006 [line number]" and press F11.
  3. Enter codes by: Typing data. Moving the cursor to the next mnemonic using arrow keys. Press F10 to send the data. To cancel type "ret" at the Home position then F10.

DELETING AN 006 FIELD

Delete field 006 as you would any variable field.
