FIU Libraries Cataloging
Cataloging of Electronic Journals
Collection Management Policy on Furthering This Activity

The project to include free electronic journals in the library's catalog--in addition to the ones we subscribe to--
will be initiated on a limited, rolling basis.
- The journals to be cataloged should be free, full-text, preferably peer-reviewed scholarly journals.
- To start the project, each selector will be limited to 5 journals titles per field.
- The selector’s list of titles with URLs should be sent via e-mail to the Head of Cataloging (swartzok@fiu.edu)
- After all the titles in a given round of selections have been cataloged, the Associate Director for Collection Management will let the selectors know that they may submit a second list.
- Because of the need to keep separate statistics for purchased vs. free electronic journals, a separate location code will be used: elcj, free. [Do not use this code for electronic journals to which we have access because of a purchased subscription to the hard copy.]
Possible review sources (additions submitted by selectors would be appreciated):
- The Chronicle of Higher Education database: http://chronicle.com/ (Tony will share his personal password on request).
- Ulrich's: http://ulrichsweb.com. It includes free journals and it has reviews when available. It has a symbol to show when it is refereed.
- NewJour: http://gort.ucsd.edu/newjour/ This is the archive of a listserv that is used to announce journals that have gone online--whether free or subscription, refereed or not.
