Paperback Binding Policy

Do NOT send any new or gift paperback books out to be bound unless:

Send books falling into categories a) - c) out for binding using the usual procedures. Process all other paperback books as if they were hardcover.

If in doubt about whether to bind a particular book consult with Collection Management.

Procedure for Binding/Mending

This applies to all books needing Binding or Mending whether they are coming from Record Creation, Database Maintenance, or Monographic Cataloging. The procedures for Binding and Mending are the same since the decision of whether to bind or mend will be made in Acquisitions.

  1. In notes area for the correct copy, add the user message "um=AT BINDERY date"
  2. Write the NOTIS number in pencil on the back of the title page in the center of the page. If it is a cover title, then write the NOTIS number on the first page with text following the cover. (Blank pages are sometimes removed by the Binder).
  3. Place the book on the shelf in Acquisitions labeled "Mending Books from Cataloging."
*NOTE for Database Maintenance: Books that go to Binding/Mending from Circulation will continue to have "ubin" placed in the temp location of the item record. If you get a book back from Acquisitions that does *not* have "um=AT BINDERY" then look for the "ubin" in the item record and remove it.
