The FIUAV,DESK location is to be used very selectively. Only books with loose plates, or materials issued in a portfolio will be sent to this location. If you have questions about specific books which may have an unusual format ask the Assistant Director for Collection Management. Size is no longer a factor in sending items to the AV Desk. Instead we will do the following with small or thin paperback books:

1. If the book has a stiff paper cover and has been stapled in the spine it can be sent to the General Collection without pam-binding

2. Send to Acquisitions the following categories to receive pam-binding or other reinforcement:
   1. Books with flimsy paper covers (same as the inside pages) or no cover at all

   2. Books that have been stapled on the outside

   3. Books that measure less than 13 cm. in height

When the decision is made:

• For new receipts:
  • New Gifts: the decision will be made by the Assistant Director for Collection Management at the time the gift is selected

  • Serials: the decision will be made by Serials staff when the item is received

  • Firms orders: the decision will be made by Acquisition staff when the item is received

  • Others: the decision will be made by Record Creation staff

• For backlogged books:
  • The cataloger will make the decision before doing any processing. If the book needs to be sent for pam-binding, etc. it will put on the marked truck in Acquisitions. After it is processed it will be returned to the Cataloging Department to be cataloged.
