856 Policy for Serials
We will use subfields 3, u and z:
Looking at MARC Standards and OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards does not provide much clarity on when to use subfield 3 and when subfield z.
We will use subfield 3 for standardized text as shown in the examples; we will use subfield z whenever we wish to add any additional information—that is “Full text:” will go in subfield 3; “Full text via Gale Virtual Reference Library:” will go in subfield z.
Subfield z: Public note—a note indicating the source of the electronic text and methods of accessing it.

Example: Address for accessing the journal using authorization number and password through OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online. Subscription to online journal required for access to abstracts and full text:
Subfield u: The Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) itself [sometimes also called URL, Uniform Resource Locator]
Subfield 3: Materials specified--used for the part of the described materials to which the field applies.

Note: Whenever possible subfield z for serials cataloging is being changed over to the SFX link.
Note: Both subfield z and subfield 3 display before subfield u even if they are entered on the MARC record after subfield u.
Note: Serials cataloging uses primarily subfield z whereas monographic cataloging uses primarily subfield 3.
