"Whole cloth, wrote John Ruskin, is 'wool of sheep, thread of flax, bark of tree--there exists no matrix. It can be shaped beyond the boundaries of origin. It shifts from the potential to an actuality that has a myriad of shapes and a myriad of ways of moving, responding to the action of the individual who manipulates it. It possesses the mysterious sense of unaccountable life in things themselves.'"
Course Description
Imagery on fabric or surface design has made a huge comeback in the fine art world in the last few years. Faith Ringgold and Miriam Shapiro, along with others have reintroduced this medium. This class will practice the technology of creating imagery on and with cloth, thread, printmaking, ink, dyes, sewing, computer, photography and photocopy along with the safety issues of handling these materials. This technology will be applied to creating a work, which communicates artistic statements and visual concepts. Conceptually works with fibers have risen out of traditions and rituals in cultures worldwide. These traditional roots will be noted and will form a basis for a new contemporary visual statement.
Course Objectives
1. Development of strong research skills and strategies for informing studio art production. This will apply to both technical and conceptual issues.
2. Introduction and application of Contemporary Art issues to fibers medium through the study of different cultural applications and rituals of cloth and imagery.
3. Development of critical awareness and analysis through dialog,
4. Honing skills in self evaluation, both on a personal level and in the context of society.

Class and Student rules and expectations
* No beepers or cell phones during lecture or demonstrations.
* Clean up your mess and contribute to the general upkeep of the studio (part of the profession!) shut lights off and lock door
if you are the last to leave.
Specifically, wipe down all areas where you have worked. Clean out stainless steel sink. One errant chunk of dye or ink will ruin a project.
* Pick up thread and make sure sewing machine is treated with the proper procedure.
Practice safety when using chemicals and dyes and other art materials.
* No disrespectful remarks.
* Studio combination is _____. Do not give this out to anyone except a fellow class member!!!
* Be ready to participate in class with the appropriate materials.
Attendance
Attendance is required. A substantial amount of work is done in class. You must complete every assignment and prepared for an interactive discussion on the due date. Your performance and contribution to the class dynamics will suffer each time you miss a session. If you miss more than two weeks of class for any reason you should expect a grade of C- or below. If you miss the demonstrations or slide lectures due to tardiness, you can consider yourself absent. Arrive 5 minutes early to class NOT 15 minutes late.
Incompletes are granted only on extreme emergency basis. Death of a parent or spouse, or severe illness. If other relatives are sick or daycare is going badly and you cannot attend class--seek a withdrawal status. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST WEEK OF CLASS TO WORK OUT YOUR REASONS FOR NOT ATTENDING CLASS. IF YOUR HAS BEEN SUFFERING ALL ALONG, THIS IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN JUSTIFYING AN INCOMPLETE. GOOD WORK AND ATTENDANCE UP UNTIL THE "EVENT" WILL BE IN YOUR FAVOR.
Evaluation
1. Attendance, active and informed class participation in critiques and on time completion of assignments.
2. Quality of planned and completed projects. Presentation, risk taking, conceptual development, physically compelling composition.
3. Prepared for class discussions, reading and other related research is checked in working design books and statements of intent.
Evaluation will be based on the student's attainment of the objectives stated above, and on the fulfillment of responsibilities of student as stated above, through demonstration and practical application. Again attendance is mandatory.
A- Outstanding work and effort in and outside of class
B-Very Good work and effort, clearly above the minimum requirements
