Honors Program in Biological Sciences:

The Honors program in Biological Sciences provides excellent students with the opportunity to do original research under a faculty sponsor.  To graduate with Honors, the student must carry out a research project, write up the project as an Honors Thesis, and present the results of the research in a Departmental seminar.

If you have applied for and been admitted to the Honors program, you register for BSC 4915L, Honors Research (1-3 cr.), two semesters before you intend to graduate.  In the Honor's Research Lab you develop and carry out your Honors research project under supervision of your faculty sponsor.  Throughout this semester of research you work in the lab and/or the field and interact with your faculty advisor and other lab personnel.

In the semester that you plan to graduate, you register for BSC 4970, Honors Thesis (3 cr.)  In this course you write up the results of your Honors research as an Honors thesis and present those results at a Departmental seminar in order to complete the Honors in Biological Sciences.

BSC 4915L (Honors Research) counts as a lab for the Biological Sciences major, while BSC 4970 (Honors Thesis) counts as an elective for the major.
