Biomedical Honors Program

Outstanding students with an interest in biomedical science are invited to apply for the Biomedical Honors in Biological Sciences. Students accepted into this program will receive orientation and group advisement through the College of Arts and Sciences Pre-Health Professions Advising Center and also the Premedical/Pre-professional Advisement Committee by appointment. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to perform biomedical-related research under the guidance of a faculty mentor, write an Honors Thesis under the guidance of a thesis committee based upon this research, and present findings in a departmental seminar. Students that successfully complete the program will be eligible to compete for the Robert J. Smiddy Undergraduate Honors Research Award.

The courses chosen to fulfill the requirements for the Biomedical Honors will be the same as for the regular B.S. program except that (a) the mathematics requirement does not include Statistics as an option (although it is highly recommended), and (b) required courses taken outside the major must include at least one of the following: ANT 3462 Medical Anthropology, PHI 4633 Biomedical Ethics, REL 3180 Medical and Bioethics or SYO 3400 Medical Sociology.

Students apply for admission to the Biomedical Honors Program at the end of their sophomore year, although students may receive provisional acceptance as early as their freshman year.  As in the Honors Program in Biological Sciences, accepted students will require placement in a research lab and register for BSC 4915L Honors Research Laboratory prior to the spring term of their 3rd year.  As stated above, the production of an honors thesis and registration for BSC 4970 is also required.  A list of faculty and their research interests is available from http://www.fiu.edu/~biology/html/people/faculty.htm
