Undergraduate Advising FAQ Sheet for Biology Majors

ADVISING for Undergraduate Biology Majors:  Before you come in make sure you have read the relevant sections in the Undergraduate Catalog.   If you want course selection/career advise, please make an appointment with Dr. Cuervo (M Tu Th F) by calling Ms. Ana Diaz at 305-348-2302 or emailing her at diaza@fiu.edu.  For graduation requirements make appointment with either Dr. Cuervo or Dr. Makemson through Ms. Diaz.   The Undergraduate Advising Center is open 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm for
walk-in advising.  Students who make appointments have priority.

Q. What is the minimum number of credit hours required for graduation?

A. 120 credit hours. Of these 50 must be upper division credit hours ex. from third or fourth year courses.

Q. How many forgivenesses are allowed under the FIU Forgiveness Policy?

A. Three. After receiving a better grade for your second attempt at the course, you may ask for a forgiveness for the previous course. The previous grade will still be printed on the transcript but the attempted and earned credit hours for the course will be deleted.

Q. Will the GPA still include the first grade along with the grade I received in my second attempt?

A. No. Only the second grade will count in your GPA from FIU. However, if you are applying to a Medical School, all the grades from FIU will be counted in their GPA evaluation.

Q. What happens if I take a course, receive a bad grade, take the course over again but do not ask for forgiveness?

Q. Suppose I earn a C- in a biology elective. Will this course count?

A. No. You must pass all biology elective courses with a C or better. Moreover, if you do not ask for forgiveness, the credit hours for this course will be deleted because it will result in a double count if you were to retake this course.

Q. After I receive my degree in biology at FIU, can I then return and finish my minor degree in another major?

A. No. The major and minor degrees must be taken concurrently at FIU.

Q. After receiving a degree in biology, can I return and apply for a second major?

A. Yes. You must complete a total of 150 credit hours which will include all the requirements of the second major.

Q. Can I combine majors and minors in the Department of Biological Sciences?

A. No. Majors and minors in the Department of Biological Sciences may not be combined. You may major or minor in Biology or Marine Biology, but not both. Either of these majors may not be combined with a minor in Biology or Marine Biology.

Q. I am a recent graduate from high school. Will my AP credits in biology count at FIU?

Q. How many credit hours can be transferred from another institution?

A. 60 credit hours are transferable. Credit hours from organic chemistry and physics courses and any other courses beyond the 60 credit hours at the community colleges will not be transferable. FIU will recognize the fact that you have taken these courses and therefore you will not be required to retake them at FIU.

Q. If I transfer from another university and I have a C- in a biology elective course that was accepted there, will I have to retake this courses at FIU?

A. These courses are usually rejected at FIU and the student will be required to repeat the course.

Q. Can a lower division course from another four year college be accepted as being equivalent to an upper division course in the biology department at FIU?

A. No, lower division credit hours from another institution cannot be accepted as upper division credit hours at FIU. They will be transferred as lower division credit hours and will count toward the 120 credit hours requirement.

Q. What courses at other institutions, other than the lower division science and math courses, will be acceptable at FIU?

A. No other courses will be accepted. General Biology I and II, General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II, Physics I and II, all with labs and Calculus I and II are acceptable from the community colleges. The State University System along with the Colleges and Community Colleges have a common course numbering system; only courses with the same number are acceptable. Further, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology and other lower division science courses from the colleges and community colleges are not acceptable in the biology department at FIU.

Q. If I received course credits and credit hours for my AP biology from another institution, will I also get the same considerations from FIU.

Q. I am an International student. What must I do to get my courses evaluated?

A. You must submit your foreign transcript to the Admissions Office and they will attempt to evaluate your courses. You must have a description and the syllabus of the courses which you wish to be evaluated. If you have concerns regarding their evaluation of the science courses, you may have these course re- evaluated by a faculty member of the biology department.
