About Us

  • The Black Graduate Student Organization (BGSO) was formed to encourage black undergraduates in their pursuit of graduate school as well as to aid in the retention of black students already in FIU’s graduate program.

  • The BGSO encourages interaction by hosting several programs that involve the wider FIU graduate and undergraduate community. Programs generally have an African theme and seek to increase awareness of black culture within the graduate student body and beyond.

Activities

  • Our flagship event is the BGSO Symposium held in late February. This event culminates Black History month activities done in conjunction with other organizations such as the Black Student Union, African New World Studies and the African Students Association. Well attended and respected by the wider graduate community the symposium features an assortment of black talent and is highlighted by a feature speaker of prominence within the black community either within the United States or abroad.

  • The BGSO also hosts a variety of smaller events including poetry nights, movie nights, community service outreach, social mixers, panel discussions and other events some of which are done in conjunction with the Black Graduate Student Association of the University of Miami.
