Rose Eliminated in first round of NCAA Singles by old nemeses

f FIU's Anneliese Rose never has to play Vanderbilt's Julie Ditty again in women's tennis singles, it will be too soon.

In a replay of the No. 1 singles match of the NCAA Team Championship Tournament two weekends ago in Nashville, the No. 15-ranked Ditty and No. 59 Rose met again, this time for the Individual Championships being played in Stone Mountain, Ga.

Despite severe weather conditions that caused the match to be delayed for more than a day and forced the use of indoor courts, the Vanderbilt senior prevailed over the younger Rose, 6-2, 6-4.

Ditty moves on, but this time, assumes the underdog role when she plays Aarthi Venkatesan of Georgia, a seven-seed in the tournament.

For Rose, her season ends, but not before putting FIU women's tennis on the map and ranked among the nation's elite. FIU finished the season with a 23-3 record which included a 4-0 shutout of Penn State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Panthers were 11-3 against ranked foes in 2001 and had that same record versus schools receiving invitations to this year's NCAA Tournament.

All six FIU singles regulars have recorded 20-or-more overall wins this year, led at the top by the junior Rose (Boynton Beach/Atlantic HS) who ranked as high as No. 59 in the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

More of the same should be expected next year with the return of five letterwinners, four of whom recorded more than 20 singles wins this past year.

Golden Panthers prepare to meet Penn State in NCAA Tourney opener

pair of first-time entrants in the postseason will square off Saturday at 10:00 a.m. when No. 25 FIU and No. 46 Penn State meet in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships at Vanderbilt's Brownlee O. Curry Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Host Vanderbilt (21-4), ranked No. 6 in Division I, plays Ohio Valley Conference champion Murray State (17-11) in the other first-round match scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday's two winners meet Sunday at noon for the regional championship.

Postseason action is nothing new for FIU Head Coach Ronni Bernstein, a four-year collegiate All-American and 1986 NCAA National doubles champion from the University of Miami. But the Golden Panthers athletes will be experiencing their first taste of postseason competition after 25 years of fielding the sport.

Yet, playing top-ranked opponents won't be anything new to this team. FIU (22-2) is 10-2 against ranked foes in 2001 and 10-2 versus schools receiving invitations to this year's NCAA Tournament. The Golden Panther and Penn State programs have never met before.

All six FIU singles regulars have recorded 20-or-more overall wins this year, led at the top by junior Anneliese Rose (Boynton Beach/Atlantic HS). Rose is ranked No. 59 in the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings and was selected to participate in Stone Mountain, Ga. next week as one of the 64 individual competitors at the NCAA Championships.

Talented freshman Mari Toro (Miami/Coral Park) holds down the No. 2 singles position. She was FIU's only Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week this past season and posted a 23-8 record. Toro has been ranked as high as No. 89 in the CTR.

Penn State is coming off its most successful season in years, after posting a 15-9 overall mark and a best-ever 5-5 record in Big Ten action. The Lady Lions are led by All-Big Ten selections Pilar Montgomery and Rebecca Ho. Montgomery went 29-10 at No. 1 singles while Ho was 25-12 at No. 2. The duo teamed up to post a 23-11 mark at No. 1 doubles as well.

The winner of this regional advances to the NCAA "Sweet 16" on May 17 hosted by Georgia State University. This region's winner will face the winner of the regional at Fresno State featuring FSU, Georgia Tech, UCLA and Cal State Northridge.

Miami Coral Park’s Mari Toro named SBC Player of the Week
"Team effort" helps FIU tennis move to No. 19 nationally

photos by Geoff Anderson
Mari Toro (left) and Anneliese Rose (right) have led the No. 19 Golden Panthers women's tennis team all season long from their No. 1 and No. 2 positions.

aybe no one was more surprised than Head Coach Ronni Bernstein that her Florida International University women’s tennis team had moved up from No. 33 in last week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings to a program-best No. 19 rating (the program got as high as No. 25 last season). Or then again, maybe she wasn’t.

"I knew that we would move up but I was sort of surprised that we had that kind of a jump," said Bernstein. "But the beauty of this year’s team is that everyone on the roster has contributed. Different matches have brought out different heroes from (single’s positions) one through six. It’s an honor to be recognized for their achievements."

The Golden Panthers are off to their best start ever in intercollegiate women’s tennis and, along the way, have taken on all comers. En route to its 16-1 record, FIU enjoyed it first-ever victories over the University of Miami, University of South Florida and Florida State. But perhaps the most eye-catching win of the year came just last week at home against SEC power and No. 28-ranked Kentucky.

FIU found itself down early, losing the opening doubles’ point by dropping all three matches in close fashion. But in singles, the team battled back against ranked opponents, and the Golden Panthers stepped up to claim a 4-3 match win.

The deciding point came in a No. 1 singles match that took 3 hours and 10 minutes to complete. FIU’s Anneliese Rose (Boynton Beach, FL/Atlantic HS), ranked No. 54 in Division I, came back after dropping the first set and beat Kentucky’s Carolina Moyorga, ranked No. 77 in the nation, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Another reason for the Golden Panthers success this season has been the play of freshman Mari Toro (Miami, FL/Coral Park HS) who has now won her last 13 straight singles matches, mostly playing out of the No. 2 position.

Yesterday, Toro was named as the Sun Belt Conference’s Player of the Week after winning all three singles matches she played last week. Last Wednesday, at No. 1 singles, she beat Virginia’s Jeannette Clusky, 6-2, 6-2. The next day, back at her normal No. 2 position, she upset No. 79-ranked Brooke Skeen of Kentucky, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

FIU’s moving up 14 spots in the national polls was no stroke of magic, but rather the work of the computer. For the first time this season, the ITA removed the subjectivity of coaches’ recommendations and fed the computer raw win-and-loss data to mathematically rank the top teams in the nation.

Household names like Stanford, Duke, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Florida top the poll released late yesterday. At No. 19, FIU is the next-highest ranked Florida school.

Despite the high ranking, an NCAA Tournament bid isn’t a shoe-in. The Golden Panthers can, however, determine their own destiny by winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship, April 20-22, in Mobile, Ala. and claiming the league’s automatic bid. But that’s won’t be an easy task.

Besides FIU, host South Alabama is ranked No. 20 in the nation, and Louisiana-Lafayette (No. 62) and Middle Tennessee (No. 64) also have their eyes on the prize.

"I think if we continue to play well there’s a shot at an at large bid to the (NCAA) Tournament, but to win our conference and claim the automatic bid, that has been our goal all year," said Bernstein. "I’m hoping we can go into Mobile and take care of things ourselves so we’re not at the mercy of a committee."

The Golden Panthers roster this season looks more like a United Nations directory. With Rose and Toro at the top, Ecuador’s Alexandra Guzman and Cristina Campana have held down the No. 3 and 5 singles spots respectively. Argentina’s Mariana Faustinelli has played the majority of time at No. 4 singles and freshman Mei Ly from Miami and Coral Gables High School has played the bulk of No. 6 singles.

Women's tennis captures 12th-straight victory with 4-3 upset over Kentucky

laying its third match in as many days, the 33rd-ranked FIU women’s tennis team raised its season record to 16-1 with a 4-3 upset victory over No. 28 Kentucky, Thursday afternoon at University Park.

FIU found itself down early, losing the opening doubles’ point by dropping all three matches in close fashion. The Golden Panthers Alexandra Guzman and Cristina Campana lost 8-6 at No. 2 doubles to the 25th-ranked UK team of Brooke Skeen and Lauren Rookledge.

But it was singles wins against ranked opponents that spelled the difference and gave FIU its 12th-straight match victory.

After straight-sets victories by FIU’s Mariana Faustinelli and Campana at No. 4 and 5 respectively, it came down two the top two positions playing against the Wildcats’ Carolina Moyorga, ranked No. 77 in the nation at No. 1, and Skeen, 79th ranked at No. 2.

At No. 2, Golden Panthers freshman Mari Toro lost the first set 1-6, before rallying, 6-3, 6-1 for the match victory. For the unranked Toro, it was her 13th-straight singles victory, raising her spring record to 14-3.

With the contest tied, 3-3, it then came down to a No. 1 singles struggle between FIU’s No. 54-ranked Anneliese Rose and Moyorga. In a match that took 3 hours and 10 minutes to complete, Rose came back from one set down to win her 16th match of the year, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The win was the 70th in the career of FIU Head Coach Ronni Bernstein, all of which have been accomplished with the Golden Panthers.
