Golden Panthers open season with 6-1 victory over Barry

o. 30-ranked FIU swept the doubles point, then took four of the five played singles matches en route to a 6-1 season-opening win over Division II Barry, Wednesday afternoon at University Park.

The Golden Panthers No. 1 doubles teams of Anneliese Rose and Cristina Campana, ranked No. 18-by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and Dominique Rosenberg and Maria Montoya at No. 2, picked up right were they left off last fall when both pairs came away with doubles titles at the Omni Hotels/ITA South Region.

Rose and Campana defeated Victoria Gurmis and Gizella Turbok, 8-3, while Rosenberg and Montoya beat Valeria Papandron and Eva Kleczek, 8-4, to secure the doubles point.

Rose won No. 1 singles vs. Gurmis, 6-2, 6-2. It was the 50th career singles win for Rose, the No. 90-ranked player in the ITA's preseason ratings. Freshman Ágnes Buronyi, Montoya and Mei Ly all won singles matches for FIU. Nazly Elsawaf won the point at No. 6 singles by default.

Barry's lone win on the afternoon came at No. 2 singles where Turbok won, 6-2, 6-0, over Campana.

The Golden Panthers next host Florida Atlantic this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. on the University Park courts.
