Golden Panthers open season
with 6-1 victory over Barry
o.
30-ranked FIU swept the doubles point, then took four of the
five played singles matches en route to a 6-1 season-opening
win over Division II Barry, Wednesday afternoon at University
Park.
The Golden Panthers No. 1 doubles teams of Anneliese
Rose and Cristina
Campana, ranked No. 18-by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association, and Dominique
Rosenberg and Maria
Montoya at No. 2, picked up right were they left off
last fall when both pairs came away with doubles titles at the
Omni Hotels/ITA South Region.
Rose and Campana defeated Victoria Gurmis and Gizella Turbok,
8-3, while Rosenberg and Montoya beat Valeria Papandron and Eva
Kleczek, 8-4, to secure the doubles point.
Rose won No. 1 singles vs. Gurmis, 6-2, 6-2. It was the 50th
career singles win for Rose, the No. 90-ranked player in the
ITA's preseason ratings. Freshman Ágnes
Buronyi, Montoya and Mei
Ly all won singles matches for FIU. Nazly
Elsawaf won the point at No. 6 singles by default.
Barry's lone win on the afternoon came at No. 2 singles where
Turbok won, 6-2, 6-0, over Campana.
The Golden Panthers next host Florida Atlantic this Saturday
at 11:00 a.m. on the University Park courts. |
