FIU's Rose and Campana win
ITA Regional doubles championship
IUs
Anneliese Rose and Cristina Campana were the upset
winners of the Flight A doubles championship at the Omni Hotel/ITA
South Regional in Mobile, Ala. It marked the first time ever
that the Golden Panthers have ever won a prestigious ITA event.
Rose and Campana defeated No. 1 seeds Agata Cioroch
and Lori Gray from the University of Gerogia, 8-6, Monday
morning. The pair now qualifies for the ITA National Indoor Championships,
Nov. 8, in Dallas, Tex.
Earlier in the weekend, FIUs Maria Montoya and
Dominique Rosenberg captured the championship of Flight
B doubles by default when their would-be finals-round
foes Jamie Larson and Jennifer Sinclair were forced
to withdraw from the competition due to injury.
Sophomore Mei Ly lost in the semifinals in Flight B
but her consolation match scheduled against the University of
Alabamas Becca Baum was canceled
Weve really worked hard this fall, especially
concentrating on the doubles since we thought that was a weakness
of ours, last season, said FIU head coach Ronni
Bernstein. This is a great opportunity for Anneliese
and Cristina in qualifying for the national tournament and its
great for FIU tennis.
Maria and Dominique played extremely well this weekend
as well, beating some very good teams along the way. And Mei
reaching the semifinals round was another very positive accomplishment
for our program.
Im very happy at the way doubles seem to be coming
along and proud of their accomplishments this past weekend. We
played a lot of matches, which was the plan. Winning like we
did should give us confidence and gets us ready for a very difficult
spring schedule, Bernstein said. |
