FIU drops Sun Belt Conference
championship match to host South Alabama
o.
28-ranked South Alabama captured its 11th straight Sun Belt Conference
women's tennis championship with a 4-0 shutout of FIU Sunday
afternoon in Mobile, Ala.
The No. 36-ranked Golden Panthers (18-6) took the first doubles
match behind Anneliese
Rose and Cristina
Campana, 8-3, over USA's Josien Boverhof and Nienke
Scheltens, but the Jaguars came back and won at No. 2 and
3 to capture the doubles point.
South Alabama (17-5) scored three points in singles to secure
the win and the league's automatic bid into one of next month's
NCAA Regional Tournaments.
USA's Dominika Nemcovicova beat Dominique
Rosenberg, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6, and then Andrea Kurekova
defeated Marina Riac at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1, setting up the
match clinching victory that featured a pair of All-Sun Belt
Conference performers.
But FIU's comeback hopes were dashed at No. 2 when Boverhof
took care of Mei
Ly, 6-1, 7-5, ending the match and giving South Alabama
the conference championship.
Following the competition, USA's Boverhof was selected the
Most Valuable Player and her coach, Joey Scrivano, was
named 2002 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
While South Alabama now awaits an opponent in the NCAA Tournament,
the Golden Panthers must rely on an at-large bid when the NCAA
announces its post-season field on May 2.
