FIU beats New Orleans, advances
to SBC Tournament finals

FIU women's tennis team beat No. 69-ranked New Orleans (21-4),
4-2, Saturday and advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Championship
finals Sunday against host South Alabama.
The No. 36-ranked Golden Panthers (18-5) won the doubles point
after taking two of three matches. FIU's No. 40-ranked Anneliese
Rose and Cristina
Campana beat UNO's Laetitia Zembski and Lucie
Mazinova, 8-4, at No. 1.
Then, in the deciding match at No. 3, the Golden Panther's
Maria
Montoya and Dominique
Rosenberg topped Liselott Hedenberg and Inge
Veerman, 8-5.
FIU clinched the victory by winning three of five singles
matches. The Golden Panthers grabbed wins at the No. 1, 4 and
5 positions. At No. 1, Rose beat Patricia Osedumme, 6-3,
6-3, and at No. 4, it was Campana over Celine Azais, 6-4,
7-6.
The match was called in FIU's favor when Marina Raic
beat Veerman, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 5 position.
It was the eighth win of the season against a ranked opponent
for the Golden Panther who now move into the conference finals
for the fourth-straight year but still look for a first-ever
Sun Belt Conference championship.
No. 28 South Alabama (16-7) advanced to the finals with a
5-0 win over Arkansas State.
Earlier this season, the Golden Panthers defeated USA in Miami
to hand the Jaguars their first Sun Belt Conference loss in over
ten years. South Alabama has won ten-straight conference tournament
titles.
The league champion earns an automatic invitation to the NCAA
Regional Tournament beginning May 10.
