FIU advances in Sun Belt
Conference tournament play
o.
36-ranked FIU advanced to Saturday's second round of the Sun
Belt Conference women's tennis championships in Mobile, Ala.
with a 4-0 win over Denver (11-8) on the Bruce David Lubel Memorial
Courts.
The Golden Panthers won the doubles point when the nation's
No. 40-ranked doubles team of Anneliese
Rose and Cristana
Campana defeated DU's Yanikc Dullens and Barb
Kowin, 8-4.
FIU (17-5) clinched the victory with three singles victories.
First, Marina Raic beat Naru Attamirano, 6-0, 6-1,
at No. 5, then Maria
Montoya took Steph Ginsburg, 6-2, 6-4, at No.
3. Campana's 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Elizabeth Matthews
proved the deciding point.
The Golden Panthers now move on in the winners' bracket, taking
on No. 69 New Orleans (21-3), Saturday at 12:30 p.m. UNO advanced
in the winners bracket with a 4-1 win over New Mexico State earlier
Friday.
A win against the Privateers would put FIU into the Sun Belt
Conference championship match, Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The league
champion earns an automatic invitation to the NCAA Regional Tournament
beginning May 10.
A loss Saturday and FIU would be forced to play the third-place
match, Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
