FIU's singles comback upsets
No. 9-ranked Tennessee, 4-3
fter
losing the doubles point in three straight games, No. 36 FIU
stormed back and won four of six singles matches en route to
a 4-3 upset over the No. 9-ranked Lady Volunteers Saturday afternoon
at University Park.
The win was the seventh straight for Golden Panthers (13-3)
and sixth win on the year against a ranked opponent.
UT saw its four-match win streak come to an end and fell to
14-5. The Lady Vols first four losses all came against top-14
ranked opponents, in fact, their only loss in the last 11 matches
was a 4-3 setback against No. 2 Vanderbilt on March 3.
Tennessee had little trouble in doubles, especially after
the Lady Vol's Agnes Wiski and Vilmarie Castellvi
beat FIU's No. 27-ranked team of Anneliese
Rose and Cristina
Campana, 8-5.
But, after No.9-ranked Castellvi beat Rose, 6-3, 6-3, in No.
1 singles, Mei
Ly got the Golden Panthers on the winning track with
a win at No. 2, 6-7, 7-5, 6-0, over Kim Gates. Ly, the
team's steadiest player of late, picked up her 12th singles win
of the spring against only four defeats.
FIU grabbed singles wins at No. 3 by Maria
Montoya, No. 4 by Campana and No. 5 by Marian Raic
to clinch the match victory. Montoya's win was the most impressive
of all, a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win over No. 86-ranked Wiski.
The Golden Panthers play host to the Big East's Seton Hall,
11:00 a.m.Sunday morning at University Park.
