FIU announces the
signing of four players
IU
Head Coach Everton Edwards announced his program signed
four players, including two from the South Florida area.
One, from Miami-Dade County, is forward Liz Durozel,
who comes from Westminster Christian. Durozel scored 90 goals
in her career, while being named to the All-Miami-Dade county
first-team her junior season. She also played on the Miami Premier
Soccer Club team the last four years and helped win the FYSA
President's Cup in 2000-01.
The second is from Broward County's American Heritage High
School, sweeper Monica Savage. Savage was part of the
2000 and 2001 state champion teams and named team MVP of the
defense in 1998. Her club team was the Boca Storm and started
on the state champion teams in 1999 and 2000.
Edwards went to the west side of Florida to recruit defender
Carly Goldich, from Tierra Verde. Goldich played for
IMG Academy in Bradenton. The academy won the club state championship
the past season, where Goldich was named to the state of Florida
Olympic Development team.
The fourth recruit also comes from the IMG Academy, midfielder
Kendell Hommel. Hommel has Olympic Development experience,
playing on the 2000 and 2001 Virginia State team, along with
the regional camps in Rhode Island and Deleware.
FIU lost its two main goal scorers of last season to graduation,
Michele O'Brien and Sasja Odenyo. The senior's
combined for 26 of the team's 42 goals, as both went over 30
points for the year.
"We are continuing to recruit well-rounded players",
said Edwards. "They should be able to come in and make
a difference right away. We saw qualities in each and thought
we could improve on that."
