Cinite leads FIU past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

ace Cinite had a career-high 22 points and Cormisha Cotton tied her career-best with 16 rebounds as the Florida International women's basketball team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 67-53, Saturday afternoon at Golden Panther Arena in Miami. With the win, FIU advances to the championship game of the 18th Annual Sun & Fun Classic and will battle Ole Miss for the title on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.

Although FIU did not trail the entire game, the Golden Panthers had trouble with the pesky Islanders. TAMU-CC hung close early, tying the game at 15-15 on a three-pointer by Amanda Bryant with 11:54 remaining in the first half, but FIU answered with a 12-4 run to make it 27-19 with 4:56 left in the first. The Golden Panthers then held off the Islanders the remainder of the first stanza and entered the locker room with a 36-29 lead.

In the second half, FIU steadily added to its lead, holding a 22-point advantage at 63-41 with 7:29 left in the game. TAMU-CC then held the Golden Panthers to four points in the final 6:04, but managed only six points of there own in that time period.

Mandy Shafer added 14 points while Ivelina Vrancheva turned in 14 points and six assists. Kristin Rogers and Roberta Plaza led the Islanders with 14 points apiece.

FIU is now 8-3 on the year and has won six of its last seven games. The Islanders fell to 6-4.

In the second game, Mississippi defeated Georgia State, 66-52. Amber Watts led the Rebels with 15 points and seven rebounds.

TAMU-CC will take on Georgia State in the consolation game of the Sun & Fun Classic on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., before FIU and Ole Miss square off for the title.
