FIU outlasts UNC-Greensboro
ace
Cinite scored a team-high 16 points, including some key baskets
in the final minutes, as the Florida International women's basketball
team defeated UNC-Greensboro, 71-64, on Friday afternoon in Greensboro,
N.C.
Cinite's lay-up with 1:09 remaining gave FIU a seven-point
advantage at 66-59. She then nailed a pair of free throws with
42 second left to put the game out of reach of the Spartans.
Free throws were key in the game, as FIU went 18-for-21 from
the charity stripe while the Spartans managed to make 8-of-15
attempts.
UNCG came out blazing and led by as many as eight points on
two occasions early, including a 27-19 advantage with 4:49 left
in the first period. FIU responded with a 13-5 run to close out
the half and entered the locker room with a 35-32 lead at the
break.
The Spartans battled back in the second stanza, coming back
to tie the game at 50 with 9:05 remaining. But FIU found an answer
again, pushing the lead to 10, 64-54, on a three-point play by
Cormisha Cotton with 3:41 left. The Spartans' Jennifer Hart then
reeled off five-straight points to cut the lead to five before
Cinite stepped up.
Silvia Mesa and Cormisha Cotton also finished in double-figures
for the Golden Panthers with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
UNCG's Jacinda Lambert led all scorers with 20 points while Hart
ended the game with 13 points.
It was fifth win in six games and the third victory in seven
days for the Golden Panthers as they improve to 7-3 on the year.
UNCG fell to 4-2, losing its first game in five tries.
FIU is off until Dec. 28-29 when it hosts the Fun & Sun
Classic featuring Georgia State, Mississippi and Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi. |
