FIU defeats Charlotte for fourth-straight victory; Next up is No. 1 Duke

andy Shafer had a game-high 18 points to lead the Florida International women's basketball team to a 71-58 victory over Charlotte on Monday night at Miami-Dade Community College-Kendall.

The Golden Panthers - who led by as many as 23 points in the second half - shot 49-percent from the field compared to 37-percent for the 49ers.

Ivelina Vrancheva fell just short of a double-double, scoring 12 points and dishing out nine assists. Anita Heller added 11 points while Milena Tomova established a new career-high with 10 points.

Jen Williams led the 49ers with 13 points while Tiffanie Hoey had eight points and seven rebounds.

It was FIU's fourth-straight win as the Golden Panthers improved to 6-2 on the year. Charlotte fell to 5-4.

Next up for FIU is a chance to upset No. 1 Duke on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Durham, N.C. On Friday, FIU will face UNC-Greensboro at noon.
