Late run helps Georgia State
upset Women's Basketball
eorgia State's Angelina Miller erupted
for seven points in the final eight minutes to lead GSU to a
72-67 upset over Florida International in the first round of
the 2002 Seminole Classic Friday night.
FIU led the game almost the entire
way, taking the lead with 18:35 in the first until Miller drove
for a layup to even the game at 56-56 a piece with 7:13 remaining
in the second period. The Panthers would push the lead to seven
two more times before FIU's Anita Heller drew the Golden Panthers
within two, 67-65, at the 42-second mark. However, GSU raced
back down as Patechia Hartman quickly found a racing Yvette Tisdale
who laid the ball in the basket at :35 and put the game out of
reach of FIU.
Golden Panther forward Mandy
Shafer posted her first career double-double, leading all scorers
with 16 points and tying teammate Dace Cinite to lead all rebounders
with 10 boards. Shafer connected on four attempts from behind
the three-point arc, falling just short of her personal best
of five treys against Miami on Dec. 9, 2000.
FIU's Ivelina Vrancheva scored
15 points, dished out eight assists and poked away four steals
in 36 minutes. Vrancheva was eighth in the nation with 6.8 assists
per game in 2000-01 before a torn ACL forced her to sit out the
2001-02 campaign.
Miller led GSU with 16 points
while Hartman and Monica Thomas each added 12 points.
It was the first time that FIU
lost in a season opener since the 1994-95 squad fell to Vanderbilt,
80-63, in the Preseason NIT on Nov. 15, 1994.
It was also FIU's first ever
loss Florida State's Seminole Classic. FIU won the tournament
in the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons.
The Golden Panthers will face
Alabama State in the consolation game of the Classic on Saturday
