Vrancheva scored a career-high 21 points while Cormisha Cotton
added 15 points and 18 rebounds to lead Florida International
past Louisiana-Lafayette, 77-41, in the first round of the 2003
Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Bowling Green,
Ky. With the win, the Golden Panthers advance to the quarterfinals
where they will face South Alabama on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
FIU opened the game with a 9-0 run and never looked back.
The Golden Panthers shot 53 percent from the field while holding
the Ragin' Cajuns to 26-percent shooting from the floor.
I think we did a good job mentally and physically,
said FIU
head coach Cindy Russo. We had two good wins at the end
of the season, so we knew we had to come out and focus and do
a good job to win.
It was the 25th career double-double for Cotton, who fell
one rebound short of tying the SBC Tournament record for caroms
in a game. Mandy Shafer added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the
third double-double of her career.
Sharee Glenn led the Ragin' Cajuns with 13 points and eight
rebounds.
FIU improves to 19-9 while ULL ends the season at 8-19. |
