Shafer's 25 lifts FIU over
Arkansas State
andy
Shafer poured in 25 points and Dace Cinite added 17 points and
11 rebounds as Florida International handed Arkansas State a
76-66 loss Thursday night in Golden Panther Arena.
Shafer connected on 10-of-19 field goal attempts including
3-of-9 from behind the three-point arc. The Golden Panthers
shot 49 percent from the field and 35 percent from long range.
FIU (17-9, 8-5 Sun Belt) came out firing, making 10 of its
first 14 shots and jumping out to a 10-point lead, 26-16, six
minutes into the game. But Golden Panther forwards Cinite and
Cormisha Cotton each picked up two fouls and ASU came back with
an 11-0 run to go ahead, 27-26, with 9:39 remaining in the first
half. The teams traded leads the rest of the period before FIU
went into the locker room with a 39-36 advantage at the half.
FIU opened the second stanza with a 7-0 run that ASU was never
able to overcome. The Lady Indians (10-17, 5-8) kept in striking
distance for most of the period, but Shafer and Silvia Mesa would
counter as the pair accounted for 23 of FIU's 37 second half
points.
Cotton finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds for
her 23rd career double-double while Ivelina Vrancheva chipped
in 11 points and 11 assists.
Z Humphries had 15 points and six rebounds while Rachel Porter
added 13 points for the Lady Indians.
FIU closes out the regular season at home against Arkansas-Little
Rock on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
