International softball head coach Kim Gwydir has announced the
signing of three high school seniors to National Letters of Intent
for the 2003-04 academic year.
Local product Jessica Fumero heads the fall recruiting class.
Fumero is in the midst of her final year at Coral Gables High
School where she was named second-team All-Miami Dade by the
Miami Herald in 2001 and 2002. The 5-3 Fumero is expected to
give FIU depth in the outfield and at shortstop.
Deomni Murray hails from Bartow High School in Bartow, Fla.,
where she earned All-Polk County honors at outfielder as a junior
while leading BHS to the 2002 FHSAA 3A Softball State Championship.
Gwydir is hoping that Murray's speed and quickness will give
FIU a boost on the base paths.
Last is John I Leonard senior Brittany Witherow. The West
Palm Beach, Fla., native is a power-hitting outfielder with a
strong arm who has been recognized as a Bright Futures Scholar
for her academic achievements at Leonard.
"Each of these girls brings something to the program
that will help us get to the next level," said Gwydir. "I
anticipate great things from them and am confident they will
achieve or exceed by expectations."
The fall signing period ends today.
